The government on Saturday, dismissed allegations of an assassination plot against the suspended First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar. It described the claims as false, unfounded, and intended to discredit ongoing court proceedings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government’s denial came a day after the SPLM-IO faction, led by Acting Chairperson Regina Kaba, issued a statement alleging a plot against Machar in Juba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This followed concerns raised by Machar’s defense team regarding alleged threats to the lives of Machar and his co-accused in the ongoing Nasir trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Addressing the media in Juba on Saturday, Ateny Wek Ateny, Minister of Information and Communication, stated that Machar continues to receive maximum security protection while under house arrest in Juba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The statement by the SPLM-IO faction alleging the assassination of Dr. Riek Machar, suspended first vice president, is totally baseless, false, and unfounded, and is intended to discredit the ongoing court proceedings,” Ateny was quoted as saying by SSBC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He affirmed that Machar’s residence is among the most heavily protected installations in the capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“As you all know and are aware, His Excellency Salva Kiir Mayardit, the President of the Republic of South Sudan, has shown genuine protection of Dr. Riek Machar every time there is tension involving Dr. Riek Machar.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“His house is one of the most protected installations, almost the same way His Excellency the President is protected,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He urged the public to disregard the allegation, describing it as “rubbish and completely nonsensical.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“For anyone to think of an assassination attempt, this is completely ridiculous, and we want to appeal to those who might have come across the allegation by the SPLM-IO to discard this and take it from us as rubbish and completely nonsensical.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ateny emphasized that this protection is particularly evident whenever tensions arise around Machar, who is currently appearing before a special court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He rejected allegations attributed to elements within the SPLM-IO faction that the government is planning to assassinate Machar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Since the SPLM-IO leader and suspended first vice president appeared before the special court, false allegations have been leveled against the government by disgruntled elements within Dr. Riek’s faction of the SPLM-IO,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He described the claims as part of a series of accusations made against the government since the suspended first vice president appeared before the court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The alleged assassination of Dr. Riek Machar is rubbish, unfounded, and exceedingly false. Only a fool can accept this because Dr. Riek Machar is being accorded maximum protection by H.E. the President while he is under house arrest in Juba.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
