The World Food Programme (WFP) on Tuesday appealed for an additional $416 million over the next six months to sustain lifesaving food and nutrition assistance in South Sudan. The organization warned that the country is facing one of its most perilous humanitarian periods in years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at a Geneva briefing on Tuesday, Matthew Hollingworth, WFP Assistant Executive Director for Programme Operations, stated that South Sudan is experiencing a “collision of crises” driven by conflict, displacement, economic hardship, climate shocks, and the war in neighboring Sudan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We have an $86 million gap right now and a $416 million gap over the next six months. Without that, we can’t serve the refugees,” Hollingworth said in a statement seen by The Dawn on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He clarified that the agency currently faces an immediate funding gap of $86 million, in addition to the $416 million required over the next six months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We can’t serve the displaced. We can’t serve the vulnerable host communities during these six months. And we can’t serve those people that are living in fear of famine in at least four locations of Jonglei State,” he emphasized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The WFP official reported that 7.8 million people, more than half of South Sudan’s population, are currently struggling to find enough food each day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that 2.2 million children and 1.2 million pregnant and breastfeeding women urgently require nutrition support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Unless additional resources are secured, more than one million vulnerable people could lose access to life-saving food and nutrition assistance by October. So this is looming.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hollingworth warned that without these additional resources, WFP would struggle to support refugees, internally displaced people, vulnerable host communities, and those at risk of famine in at least four locations in Jonglei State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noted that the humanitarian situation has sharply deteriorated since his previous assignment as WFP country director in South Sudan, which ended in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He observed that humanitarian assistance across the country has declined at a time when needs are increasing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Malakal, WFP’s food stocks have fallen dramatically. At the same time last year, the agency had approximately 10,000 metric tons of food positioned at its logistics hub to serve vulnerable communities across the Greater Upper Nile region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Last year in Malakal at this time, we had 10,000 metric tons of food positioned, ready to go the moment the rainy season withdrew so that we could get food out to areas as they became accessible as we identified vulnerability,” he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Today, there’s less than 300 metric tons of food in that same complex, not because the numbers have fallen, not because there’s less need, not because things have improved, but because, simply put, humanitarian agencies just don’t have the resources anymore that they once had.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Hollingworth, approximately 3,000 refugees and returnees cross into South Sudan every week, arriving in communities that are already struggling to meet their own food and basic needs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
