Farmers in Kolye, Rejaf Payam, have adopted irrigation with support from India, Brazil, and South Africa (IBSA) after prolonged dry spells and unreliable rainfall threatened vegetable production in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hellen Doki, a 25-year-old mother of four and a resident of Kolye, stated that farmers resorted to irrigation after a protracted dry spell in February of this year led to severe wilting of vegetables across Rejaf Payam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Water is a problem because there is no rain. We have now been introduced to irrigation, allowing us to grow vegetables such as jute mallow, eggplants, and cowpeas. Jute mallow takes one month to harvest,” Doki explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She added, “We are now in a new farming cycle, and vegetable farming is very helpful. Eggplants take two months. Once the harvest begins, we sell some of the produce in the Juba market.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Empowering Women and Youth to Drive Sustainable Agriculture (EWYSA) project is a million-dollar initiative funded through South-South Cooperation by the IBSA Facility for Poverty and Hunger Alleviation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project, which focuses on strengthening sustainable agricultural livelihoods and community development, brought together 50 small-scale farmers, approximately 60 percent of whom are women, to grow okra, jute mallow, eggplant, kale, cowpeas, and tomatoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Francis Lado, a 16-year-old farmer and a Grade 7 pupil at Rejaf West Primary School, noted that the irrigation scheme has enabled farmers to grow vegetables year-round despite limited rainfall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Our vegetables withered because of the dry spell, but with the irrigation method, the vegetable farm is now watered twice a day, morning and evening. Eggplant and okra take two months,” Lado said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He continued, “It’s not the first time we’ve grown vegetables. In February, the vegetable farm was destroyed by drought, but irrigation will revive the business. We earn money for medical treatment and school fees.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nuna Rhoda Rudolf Ndefu, the Minister of Gender, Child, and Social Welfare, stated that the EWYSA project will enhance the capacity of South Sudanese women and men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The project aims to build the capacity of women and young men to increase production so they can provide food for their families and have a surplus to sell in the market, thereby increasing their income,” Ndefu explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peter Duku John, an agronomist working with Oxfam, mentioned that farmers across Juba County are receiving support to irrigate fast-maturing vegetables including cowpeas, eggplant, jute mallow, and okra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We supported vegetable farmers with an irrigation scheme, conducted soil analysis, and ensured the produce reaches the market. We also provided organic pesticides and trained farmers on the use of organic manure,” John said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added, “We have new crop varieties that require technical support. We are working closely with the Ministry of Agriculture at the state, county, and payam levels. Farmers are now in their second production cycle and sell produce in the Konyoknyo and Gumbo markets.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mahlodi Sam Muofhe, the Ambassador of South Africa to South Sudan, stated that the EWYSA project aims to improve food security, create employment, and increase income for South Sudanese women and youth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
