Since joining the company, my situation has changed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He urged the government to provide Chinese companies with more opportunities to invest in and undertake development projects, saying this would create more employment opportunities for local workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For another young South Sudanese worker, the project has provided a pathway to continue his education while earning an income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Akot Machut Mathon, 30, a security guard stationed at the Chinese construction camp at Juba Teaching Hospital, said the income he earns from the job helps him pay his tuition fees at the University of Juba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Machut, who was hired through Pro-Nile Risk Management, a private security firm, is a third-year student pursuing a degree in Public Health at the University of Juba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am a student at the University of Juba, and since I started this job, it has helped me pay my tuition fees. This is how I am benefiting from working with the company.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Machut said he earns $100 per month; of which he saves $50 to help pay his tuition fees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are paying SSP 4 million, plus a $100 development fee. I earn $100 per month, of which I save $50 to pay my tuition fees, while the remaining $50 covers my basic needs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He encouraged young people to seek employment opportunities and become self-reliant rather than depending on others, urging them to consider construction work as a viable source of income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou can work as a young person like me to support yourself. Don\u2019t depend solely on having a degree or diploma. Nearly 500 local workers have been employed,\u201d Yong told <em>The Dawn<\/em> in an interview on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe create jobs for local people and help them improve working skills. This further strengthens the friendship between China and South Sudan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond employment and skills development, Yong said the project will provide modern medical equipment and facilities aimed at improving healthcare services and addressing gaps in South Sudan\u2019s medical infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs an important people-livelihood aid project, once put into use, it will make up for the shortage of local medical infrastructure,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt will greatly improve local medical treatment conditions and raise the hospital\u2019s overall medical service capacity. It will benefit many people in South Sudan and bring real value to people\u2019s daily life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Yong, construction is progressing in an orderly manner, with about 80 percent of the interior decoration and finishing works already completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the current works are focused on the external fa\u00e7ade, roads, public squares and other outdoor facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A Major Upgrade to Juba Teaching Hospital<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\" src=\"http:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-101.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-445\" srcset=\"http:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-101.png 624w, http:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-101-300x169.png 300w, http:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-101-480x270.png 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ayuen Philip, Deputy Director of Administration and Finance at Juba Teaching Hospital and coordinator of the Chinese construction project speaks to the dawn on Tuesday (Photo Awan Achiek)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ayuen Philip, Deputy Director of Administration and Finance at Juba Teaching Hospital and coordinator of the Chinese construction project, said the Phase II project represents a transformative upgrade that will add a 16,000-square-metre complex comprising six specialized units and hundreds of additional beds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe structure itself is well designed, a model one, and even the first-class building, which they are building now,\u201d Philip said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the Phase II project will equip the hospital with modern medical equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe project will come with a range of modern medical equipment that is currently unavailable in South Sudan, including MRI machines, advanced CT scanners, ultrasound machines and other state-of-the-art medical equipment. These will all be installed in the new facility,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Philip said the Chinese government is not only supporting the construction of Juba Teaching Hospital but is also providing free medical services through Chinese doctors and donating medical supplies to the hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the Phase II project will involve the construction of six new buildings, in addition to the two facilities built during Phase I of the China-aided project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Phase One of the China-aided project, comprising the outpatient and emergency building, the obstetrics and gynecology building, and dormitories for the Chinese Medical Team, was inaugurated in September 2017. Construction was completed and the facilities were handed over to South Sudan in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>From Construction to Healthcare<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Phase II project, located in downtown Juba, officially commenced on May 20, 2024, and is scheduled for completion in January 2027, with the project team expecting handover between February and March next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The expansion covers 19,500 square metres of land and includes a total building area of 16,779 square metres, with capacity for 272 hospital beds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Phase II expansion and renovation of Juba Teaching Hospital is being constructed by China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) under a China-aided project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project includes the construction of an outpatient and administration complex, a medical technology and inpatient complex, an infectious-disease ward, a logistics building, a water tower and sewage treatment facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the nearly 500 South Sudanese workers engaged during the construction, however, the project represents more than the physical expansion of a hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Richard, it means a regular income and the ability to provide for his family. For Machut, it means an opportunity to pay his university tuition while pursuing a degree in Public Health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And for the wider community, the completed project is expected to provide expanded hospital capacity, modern medical equipment and improved healthcare services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In that sense, the project is being built on more than concrete and steel.
