When that balance is disrupted, forests suffer, losing their ability to provide the benefits on which people and economies depend.

This is happening around the world before our eyes, and restoring these damaged forests and landscapes should not be treated as optional. It is the way forward for meeting our food security, climate and biodiversity goals while supporting livelihoods and a sustainable economy.

First, the scale of the loss must be recognized.

An estimated 489 million hectares of forest were lost between 1990 and 2025 through deforestation, where forests are cleared and used for other purposes. But almost the same number of hectares – more than 460 million – are currently degraded worldwide – still standing, but unhealthy, damaged and no longer able to function as they once did.

This is forest degradation, caused by unsustainable use such as overgrazing and overharvesting, urbanization, wildfires, pests, diseases and invasive species, drought and climate change.

As a result, forests’ ability to regulate the climate, support biodiversity, maintain soil quality and provide clean water is suffering, even as global demand for food, wood, energy and other benefits from the land, not least forests, is rising.

It’s not just forests, either. Altogether, 1.56 billion hectares of land are now degraded worldwide, including forests and other wooded lands, croplands, pasturelands, drylands and wetlands.

In short, the gap between nature’s capacity to provide and human needs keeps getting wider.

The consequences are profound: more easily disrupted supplies of food and other agricultural products, declining biodiversity, greater climate risks and lost economic opportunities.

The solution to these challenges is what experts call integrated forest and landscape restoration, which works to balance land conservation and economic production while improving people’s lives and productivity.

It can bring damaged forests and landscapes back to life – by planting trees, helping forests regenerate naturally and improving land management while paying careful attention the effects of each and every action and ensuring the support and participation of local people.

One approach is agroforestry, which involves growing and maintaining trees alongside crops and sometimes animals on the same land. This can fundamentally transform how we tackle agriculture and food production as a whole – giving us a more stable climate, clean water and richer soil, while helping create businesses that are both sustainable and profitable.

There is a strong economic case. Healthy ecosystems underpin more than half of the world’s GDP, and well-designed restoration creates jobs as well as healing forests. It revitalizes production systems and makes the economy more resilient to future climate shocks. Under the right conditions, every dollar spent on restoration can return as much as 30 dollars.

Doing nothing costs more than fixing the problem. That is true in narrowly financial terms, and truer still once we count the losses that never get quantified – social cohesion, cultural identity, knowledge built over generations and easily lost in one.

Over the past two decades, national, regional and global initiatives have pledged to bring more than one billion hectares of land under restoration. The area under restoration is growing in many countries, and policy frameworks are improving, but progress isn’t enough.

To meet the world’s 2030 goals, we need 470 million hectares of land under restoration. Right now, we are at 206.5 million hectares of forest and landscape across 62 countries – well short of the target.

The State of the World’s Forests 2026 [LINK][GV1] report from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) shows how this can be done – by involving people living and working on those lands, by balancing nature with humanity’s needs, finding sufficient funding, and putting the right policies, laws and institutions in place.

Such work is already ongoing. In Indonesia, that has meant restoring the coastline of Demak in Northern Java. Mangroves cleared over decades for unsustainable fishing ponds and groundwater extraction had left villages exposed to chronic flooding, with incomes down by 60 to 80 percent. By building permeable offshore barriers to trap sediment, the project let the mangroves regenerate naturally. They now buffer 10,000 people from coastal erosion, storm surges and saltwater entering their land and water supplies, store carbon and support the fisheries villagers depend on.

In southern Kenya, drought and overgrazing had degraded the iconic Amboseli-Chyulu ecosystem, to which Maasai communities are closely linked. A community-led initiative is combining traditional knowledge with the low-cost half-moon method – small earth embankments that trap rainwater and revive native grasses. Over 700 women and youth are leading the effort, and the results are remarkable: improved soil, the return of native grasses and wildlife, and seed banks that turn restoration into a source of income.

In Brazil’s Caatinga drylands, the Xukuru do Ororubá peoples are leading a biocentric restoration of recently reacquired territory degraded over 400 years. They treat rivers, forests and rocks as living relatives with intrinsic rights and have restored 91 hectares across five villages since December 2023, growing 48,000 seedlings of 108 native species and reviving fauna, flora and water.

These examples, which are among 18 case studies presented in The State of the World’s Forests 2026, demonstrate that restoration is not simply planting trees wherever there is space. It is bringing land back to health so that it can perform its ecological functions – holding water, sustaining soil and supporting life – while making life better for people, too.

The United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration runs through 2030. The knowledge, the tools and the momentum are already in our hands. What remains is to use them at scale, before the window closes.

Forests are living ecosystems that thrive on balance.
