Kumuri Farm has created employment for 140 South Sudanese, providing stable incomes, strengthening household food security, and demonstrating how investment in agriculture can improve livelihoods while contributing to the country&#8217;s economic growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Located in Luri Payam, Juba County, a few kilometers from the office of the Juba County Commissioner, Kumuri Farm has become a source of hope for many families. Owned by South Sudanese entrepreneur and politician David John Kumuri, the commercial farm employs local residents in planting, harvesting, processing, and other agricultural activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Peter Abini, one of the farm workers, employment at Kumuri Farm has transformed his life by providing a steady income that enables him to support his family, pay school fees, and meet basic needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A father of five, Peter said life was difficult before he joined the farm, but his living conditions have improved significantly since securing employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Before joining Kumuri Farm, I was struggling a lot, but since I started working here, my life has improved. I now eat what we produce on the farm and use the income from this work to support my family,&#8221; Peter said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;People in this area are very happy because the farm is not only benefiting John Kumuri, the owner, but also the residents of Luri who are able to access and consume the produce from the farm.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peter said the income he earns enables him to pay SSP 800,000 in school fees for his five children studying in Yambio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;My five children were not able to attend school before, but now they are enrolled, studying, and able to access food,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I am paid SSP 400,000 per month, plus an additional SSP 50,000 daily for other activities I perform on the farm.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond employment, Peter said workers also benefit from access to fresh produce grown on the farm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We should embrace farming. We are producing large quantities of maize and other vegetables without using fertilizers. If more South Sudanese engage in agriculture, we will reduce our dependence on imported food.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He urged South Sudanese to invest in agriculture, saying increased local food production could help the country become self-sufficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We can even supply other countries with food produced here. She works as a cook while participating in land clearing, planting, harvesting, processing, and other farm operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 25-year-old mother of five previously earned a small income working in the market before joining Kumuri Farm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I earn SSP 50,000 daily and receive additional payment for cooking. I use the money to buy medicine for my children and support my family,&#8221; John said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She encouraged more women to embrace agriculture as a source of income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;My message to my fellow women is that instead of staying at home idle, they should join farming so they can earn an income to support themselves and their families.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another worker, Alex Sebit, joined Kumuri Farm in December 2025 after leaving an industrial job because of low wages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said he now earns SSP 40,000 per day for casual work, including land clearing, planting, harvesting, and processing activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We are working well, and we are paid SSP 40,000 per day. At the end of each week, we receive our payments,&#8221; Sebit said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I use this money to support my family by paying for food, medical expenses, school fees, and other basic needs.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sebit also called on South Sudanese to embrace agriculture as a way of reducing hunger and dependence on imported food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We need to engage in farming to eradicate hunger. So we almost received 140 people, both youths and women,&#8221; Kumuri said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said his passion for agriculture was inspired by the speeches of the late Dr. John Garang de Mabior and President Salva Kiir Mayardit, who encouraged South Sudanese to engage in farming and become productive citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Without production, we will not be able to improve our economy of the country, and the government even will not get some taxes,&#8221; Kumuri said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Standing in a flourishing maize field established in 2025, Kumuri, who also serves as spokesperson for the National Security Service (NSS), said he started farming on six acres before expanding to 12 acres. He has now prepared land capable of supporting up to 100 acres of cultivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We are improving a lot, and the farm is attracting a lot of youths from different communities in Rombur and around also, Juba, the people of South Sudan,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kumuri said the farm supplies maize, okra, watermelon, and other produce to Konyo-Konyo and Kubri Haboba markets, contributing to local food production and economic growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking ahead, he plans to expand the project to all six counties of Central Equatoria State and eventually across South Sudan. His vision includes acquiring machinery to process maize locally and supplying agricultural products to markets in the country&#8217;s 10 states and three administrative areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Kumuri, agriculture is more than a business\u2014it is an investment in South Sudan&#8217;s future.
