{"id":91,"date":"2026-09-04T13:33:00","date_gmt":"2026-09-04T13:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/?p=91"},"modified":"2026-09-04T13:33:00","modified_gmt":"2026-09-04T13:33:00","slug":"young-entrepreneur-builds-a-thriving-honey-enterprise-from-humble-beginnings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/?p=91","title":{"rendered":"Young Entrepreneur Builds a Thriving Honey Enterprise from Humble Beginnings"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"832\" src=\"http:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-92\" srcset=\"http:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image.png 624w, http:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-225x300.png 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By Awan Achiek<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What began with just 50,000 South Sudanese Pounds and a dream inspired by his late father has grown into a thriving honey business that is changing lives in local communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Issac Wako, a 24-year-old graduate with a Bachelor&#8217;s degree in Economics from Catholic University of South Sudan, is proving that agribusiness can be a powerful tool for youth empowerment and self-reliance in South Sudan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through determination, innovation and a passion for beekeeping, the young entrepreneur has expanded his honey production venture, creating a source of income and employment for many young people involved in harvesting, packaging and distribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inspired by his father&#8217;s sacrifices as a honey farmer to educate his family, Wako is now carrying forward that legacy, inspiring a new generation to view agriculture not as a struggle but as an opportunity for growth and transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wako, Chief Executive Officer of Junub Organic Products, stated he was inspired to venture into the honey business by his late father, whose beekeeping supported the family and funded his education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I was inspired by my late father, who was a beekeeper himself. Through beekeeping, he supported his family and paid for my school fees from primary school right through to university,&#8221; Wako said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wako explained that after graduating in May 2022, he invested 50,000 SSP as startup capital for his honey business, at a time when a single jerrycan of honey cost approximately 10,000 SSP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I started with 50,000 SSP as my startup capital. I began selling on a small scale, but we later expanded significantly. By late 2023, we had invested almost 700,000 SSP into the business,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that the company sells honey in various package sizes, with one litre selling for SSP 30,000 and a five-litre container priced at SSP 150,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Wako, the business is projected to record an annual income of approximately 7,000 US dollars in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He further noted that the business has created employment opportunities for six young people, including university students, enabling them to earn an income and achieve self-reliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;When I started this business, I worked alone, but I currently employ six people. Five of these are university students, and this income helps them pay for their studies,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wako highlighted that they source honey directly from farmers, thereby empowering local producers and strengthening their livelihoods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"339\" src=\"http:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-93\" srcset=\"http:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-1.png 624w, http:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-1-300x163.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We have also created a stable source of income and a market for a group of farmers. Having partnered with them for two years, we have established reliable market opportunities,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that the company plans to officially register the business with the government in 2025 and establish a permanent facility equipped with a honey-processing machine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wako noted that poor road infrastructure continues to delay the delivery of honey products, while multiple layers of taxation also affect the business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;During the dry season, it takes only one day to receive stock, but during the rainy season, it can take three to four days before new stock arrives,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Our biggest challenge currently is multiple taxation. When transporting honey, there are several checkpoints where charges are imposed on each bucket, and we normally transport at least 30-kilogramme buckets.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He stated that within the next two years, the company hopes to have its products certified by the South Sudan National Bureau of Standards, enabling it to export honey beyond South Sudan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We do not want to only sell locally. By the end of the next five years, we should be able to export our products regionally and internationally,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wako further stated that the company plans to expand its workforce from six employees to 30 permanent staff members within the next five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He encouraged young people to embrace entrepreneurship as a path to earning income and achieving self-reliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;My message to the youth is that we should not accept being labelled lazy. It is important for young people to use their youthful age to do something meaningful, regardless of the field or type of work,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Margret Tabu Costa, an employee of Junub Organic Products, confirmed she has been working with the company since 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This work has given me valuable knowledge and a source of income. I also take some of the company&#8217;s products, sell them, and generate a profit,&#8221; Tabu said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She added that the honey business generates income, supporting farmers and rural communities by creating a reliable market for local products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tabu explained that the business started as a small experiment, steadily growing after receiving positive feedback from customers who preferred locally produced honey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She noted that the increasing demand encouraged the company to invest in modern beekeeping methods to improve production and quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;\u201cWhen honey is delivered to us, we carry out the extraction process and package each jerrycan at SSP 15,000.
