They have become emblems of strength, masculinity, and identity, with certain beads associated with specific tribes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Groups like Ma Mara Sakit are training women to create various bead designs, allowing them to earn a living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Akeer Gai, the Sales and Marketing Officer for Ma Mara Sakit, oversees a program called Suksukna, which translates to &#8220;our beads&#8221; in simple Arabic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Akeer explained that their mission is twofold: to generate income and to promote cultural identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We felt like our cultures are dying in a way that they&#8217;re not being preserved. So we thought of using beads to revive our fading traditions,&#8221; she told The Dawn in an exclusive interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The group purchases beads, modernizes them, and sells them locally and regionally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Currently, we primarily focus on making necklaces and corsets, including styles like the traditional Dinka corsets,&#8221; Akeer noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Founded in 2022 with funding from the Canadian embassy, the Suksukna program has trained 13 young women in bead-making, empowering them toward self-sufficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;These young women are not only contributing to our initiative but also advancing their personal development. We aim to provide them with skills and training to empower them,&#8221; Akeer added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many participants are using their newfound skills for personal benefit, whether to sustain their families or generate income through sales. &#8220;They are feeding their families and starting their own ventures,&#8221; she remarked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"493\" src=\"http:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-104\" srcset=\"http:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-3.png 624w, http:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-3-300x237.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Akeer explained the economics of their work: &#8220;Creating one corset &nbsp;costs about 47,000 SSP, and it can sell for around $70. We ensure that the women who produce these items are fairly compensated for their labor.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Women involved in bead-making earn $100 based on their production volume. &#8220;For a corset, they receive about $100. For simpler necklaces, the earnings range from $10 to $20, depending on the quantity made,&#8221; she clarified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, the organization generates revenue by renting beads for various events, like weddings, bringing in about $2,000 annually. &#8220;Renting out beads not only supports our office financially but also helps cover expenses like printing supplies and electricity,&#8221; Akeer explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She encouraged young people to start small businesses, emphasizing that they can grow into larger enterprises over time. Looking ahead, Akeer expressed plans for the next five years to establish a dedicated shop for selling beads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We also aim to train more women to empower them with skills and to create traditional attire from cultures we have yet to represent,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In South Sudan, beads hold significant cultural importance, especially among the older generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, among the Shilluk, different bead colors signify various family lineages, a tradition also seen in groups like the Dinka, Mundari, and Lotuko.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The market for bead-related accessories is expanding, with small businesses now offering handmade combs, grooming kits, and organic oils, contributing to a vibrant cultural phenomenon that continues to shape South Sudan&#8217;s local markets and national identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Angelina Michael, one of the bead makers, shared that she began her bead-making journey in Sudan in 2002 when she was a young girl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"468\" src=\"http:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-105\" srcset=\"http:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-4.png 624w, http:\/\/thedawn.com.ss\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-4-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Since childhood, bead-making has helped me support my siblings by covering their school fees. We are orphans; my father passed away a long time ago.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She mentioned that some of her siblings completed their education with the money she earned from bead-making and hand-tailoring bed shirts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I started making beads in Sudan in 2002, creating beads for bracelets and necklaces, and we operated a shop to sell them,&#8221; said Mama Angelina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even after getting married, she continued her bead-making.
