The council of ministers on Friday approved the amendment of Emolument Act to increase the benefits and allowances of public servants and legislators.

The emolument Act provides for the financial framework that defines and regulates salaries, allowances and privileges of members of the transitional national legislature and constitutional post- holders.

“The minister of finance, Barnaba Bak Chol briefed the cabinet on the pay of the new salary structure for the month of July, and how it is progressing and that they are in the process of amending Emolument Act for the constitutional post -holders and legislators,” said Michael Makuei Lueth, the minister of information after the weekly cabinet meeting in Juba on Friday.

He said the salary of constitutional post- holders and legislators will only be increased by 400 percent if the Emolument Act is amended.

“This is the time when the salaries will be adjusted accordingly, so he briefed the cabinet about that and the cabinet gave him ok,” said Makuei.

“It is worth mentioning that this new salary structure or increment did not apply to public servants, it is only for civil servants. Public servants are constitutional post- holders and legislators and this didn’t include them and so they are still on their old pay roll,” he added.

In August, the transitional national legislative assembly approved the increase of salaries of civil servants by 400 percent in the 2023/24 fiscal budget.
