The National Youth Union on Monday called off its third convention scheduled for December to elect new leadership due to interference from the national minister of youth and sport.
“We are here to inform the public and people of South Sudan, especially the youth that the third National Youth Convention that was scheduled to take place in December will not take place as scheduled because of some challenges we are facing as anion,” said Gola Boyoi Gola, chairman of the national youth union during press conference held in Juba.
The third convention that had been scheduled to take place on December 10 to 17 was meant to elect new leadership.
Boyoi accused Dr. Albino Bol Dhieu the minister of youth and sport of interfering in the election of the youth union.
He said on December 11th, the youth union leadership will announce the end of their term of office and hand over the office to ministry of youth and sport.
“We are going to have a council meeting on 9, 10 and 11 of December respectively and if we could not reach the quorum that is required by the constitution then on 11 of December, we are going to make a press statement announcing the end of our term in office,” said Boyoi.
“We are going to hand over the leadership to the ministry of youth and sport, especially the youth commission which will be the one to form preparatory committee to conduct the third national convention in the period of three months,” he disclosed.
For his part, Majok Anyakdit, deputy chairperson of the national youth union alleged that the minister of youth is obstructing them from conducting elections as scheduled.
“He has been obstructing the national youth union’s preparation to conduct elections on time and as per now, it has reached our limitation and you can see elections will not take place as planned due to the interference of the minister,” said Anyakdit.
Efforts to reach the minister of youth and sport, Dr. Albino Bol Dhieu were futile by press time as he could not pick our phone calls.
