Parliament summons interior minister, top police officers over new fees on motorists

The standing specialized committee on national security and public order in the transitional national legislative assembly (TNLA), has summoned the minister of interior and the Inspector General of Police to answer queries regarding the new fees imposed on motorists.

The standing specialized committee on national security and public order in the transitional national legislative assembly (TNLA), has summoned the minister of interior and the Inspector General of Police to answer queries regarding the new fees imposed on motorists.

The traffic police is currently charging 20,000 South Sudanese Pounds on motorists leaving Juba for the states and vehicles entering through the Nimule border.

“It is my pleasure to invite you, IGP, A/IGP for Traffic and the Director General of Traffic Police, Major Gen. Kon John Akot to answer the concerns from the committee of National Security and Public Order such as the statement made in the social media by Major Gen. Kon John Akot that the Parliament is illegitimate and illegal,” Simon Kun Puoch, the chair of the specialized committee on national security and public order said in a summon seen by the Dawn in Juba on Tuesday.

All three officials have been summoned to appear before Parliament’s committee on Thursday.

The committee wants particularly, Maj. Gen Kon John Akot to appear to answer for his statements that appeared to undermine the powers of the national legislative assembly.

In addition, the summoned officials will also answer for the new charges imposed against the travellers and motorists.
