Central Equatoria state emerged the best performing team in the men’s category, while Wau athletics team won the women category at the just concluded second edition of the national athletics championship held in Juba.

Marko Akol, the Secretary General of the South Sudan Athletics Federation said the second edition is different from the first edition, because of the records broken by some of the athletes.

 “We have also new athletes coming up with new records and talents, some of the athletes will go outside to South Africa and Botswana,” he told journalists at Buluk playground in Juba..

The second edition of the national athletics championship was held from November 24 to 25th under the theme “Sport for peace and unity.

The games were sponsored by Bonnke Group of companies and Digitel mobile telecom company.

Akol revealed that South Sudan will participate in the upcoming All African Games slated for March 2024.

He said athletes such as Lucia William and Tiel Deng are training in neighboring Kenya ahead of the All Africa Games.

Peter Patrisio, the coach of Wau athletics team said there is need to establish athletics tracks surfaces for the runners in Wau.

“We have challenges in Wau, we have athletes but we have no tracks for training, we do training in football fields, we need a training facility because skilled athletes can represent the country,” Patrisio said.

Majok Ayii Muorwel, the President of South Sudan Athletics Federation said athletics like any other sport activities is capable of contributing toward peace and unity among South Sudanese.

 “We have a plan for peace through sport, as we all know athletics bring people together, we will engage our people through sport for peace and unity,” he said.
