The Minister of Finance and Planning Dr. Bak Barnaba Chol has shut down the operation of 51 clearing agents at Nimule border over failure to renew their licenses.
“I have around 49 clearing agencies that have their licenses expired as of today (Monday) and two are just due in two days or three days, so you will have a total of 51 clearing agencies with expired licenses,” Chol was quoted by SSBC on Monday.
He said the ministry doesn’t have any plans to renew the licenses of the affected clearing agencies.
“We will go back to Juba and we will see from there if we are to renew their contracts, it will be a different subject but today, I will close down 51 offices, I will close them down completely because their licenses expired,” Chol said.
Albino Dak, Deputy Commissioner General for the South Sudan Revenue Authority warned customs officers at the Nimule border against illegal collection of fees.
“This issue of collection of cash, nobody is allowed anymore (to collect cash), and whoever is found whether security or anybody there is no more tax collection by cash,” said Dak.
“All the cash, we are going to introduce one form and all will have to pay through that one form, you finish with custom, and somebody will be next to you whether I.C.D or whoever, this is the collection which is allowed in the law.”
He said unnecessary collection of fees by unauthorized institutions at the Nimule border is prohibited. “If you collect money outside the law then this is illegal collection and these illegal collections will not be allowed anymore and from today onward, this is what will happen,” he said.
