The Executive Director for the National Deaf Youth and Miss Deaf Africa,Josephine Kiden said people with special needs face discrimination in education.

Speaking through her sign language interpreter, the beauty queen said education facilities are not inclusive to people living with disabilities

“We are not given that opportunities for us to be in school as people living with disability, most especially those with hearing impairment. We are left behind and we are still behind,” Kiden said during a press conference held on Monday in Juba.

She urged the government to recruit and train people in sign language to help in educating people with special needs.

“You know in South Sudan, we have no sign language interpreter and they have already ratified the UN Convention and as you know, they need to help in educating people with hearing impairment,” Kiden said.

She hailed President Salva Kiir Mayardit for ratifying the UN Convention on Disability Rights, saying the ratification is expected to bring a shift in the status of persons with disabilities in the country.

“I am happy that the President of South Sudan signed the UN convention on 24th February this year and this has given me confidence for advocating for people with disabilities.”

President Salva Kiir endorsed the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities on Feb. 21 2023.

This move elevated South Sudan to become the 185th country to ratify the U.N Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

The U.N Convention on the Rights for Persons with Disabilities serves as a global protocol dedicated to advancing, safeguarding, and guaranteeing equal enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms for all individuals with disabilities.
