"We Dare where others fear"
The government recently sent a delegation to attend the 2023 Global Refugee Forum in Geneva, Switzerland.
The ministers of interior and humanitarian affairs and disaster management were right to lobby the international community for funds to address the humanitarian crisis caused by the ongoing war in neighboring Sudan.
Prior to outbreak of fighting in Khartoum, South Sudan was already dealing more than 2 million people displaced internally following years of conflict.
Currently South Sudan is hosting more than 400,000 returnees including refugees who fled fighting in Sudan.
This situation cannot only be addressed by the government in Juba but needs support from the international community, because the war in Sudan seems to last longer as the parties have not embraced direct talks to solve their differences.
The international community should abandon South Sudan at this time despite the ongoing wars in Gaza and Ukraine.
The United Nations agencies in South Sudan recently said they require 1.8 billion U.S dollars to address humanitarian needs in 2024. This money is urgently needed because several humanitarian agencies have recently scaled down their humanitarian operations due to shortage of funds.
