At least 10 children abducted recently from Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) have been recovered in Uror County of Jonglei State.

Elizabeth Nyadak John, the Jonglei State Minister of Information and Communication said the children were handed over to Save the Children.

“The children were handed over to Save the Children and they will take the children to Pibor and Pibor government will give them to their respective families,” said Nyadak in an interview on Tuesday.

Nyadak said the children were recovered within this week from Uror County of Jonglei State.

“These children were abducted within this period of the year, you know there are some people who used to go to Murle and come with children and they will never tell you that they come with children,” she said.

She disclosed that the abductees will be handed over to the government of Greater Pibor Administrative Area by Save the Children.

“On our side, we don’t want to break the chain of peace, we are implementing what the peace said and this is the reason why whenever we there are some abducted children in our state, we have to take them back to their respective parents,” said Nyadak.

She reaffirmed her government’s commitment to continue to reunite abductees with their parents.

“We don’t need other people’s children to be kept in our state. You know a child is a child and there is a child right and a child must be with his or her parents,” said Nyadak.

“Whenever they abducted children from Jonglei State, they don’t return the children. Whenever they took the kids they used those kids like a business, they sold them out with cow and exchange with cow and the rest will come back looking more children,” she disclosed.

Jonglei state has been mired in rampant communal violence characterized by cattle raiding, revenge killings and child abduction.

Authorities in Jonglei state have blamed some incidents of violence on armed Murle youth from the neighboring Greater Pibor Administrative Area.

Denay Jock Chagor, Governor of Jonglei State while appearing before lawmakers in the national legislative assembly in October, said that more than 266 abducted children and women were traced and reunited with their families between 2021 and 2023 in Greater Jonglei State.

He said his state had returned 255 abductees to GPAA while the authorities of GPAA had handed over to them only 11 abductees between 2021 and 2023.
