A prominent activist on Thursday welcomed President Salva Kiir’s decision to summon four governors including the chief Administrator of Abyei Special Administrative over the conflict between Warrap state and Abyei Administrative Area.
On Thursday, President Kiir summoned Warrap State Governor, Kuol Muor Muor, Rin Tueny Mabor of Lakes State, Tong Akeen of Northern Bahr el Ghazal, and Abyei Chief Administrator, Chol Deng and Unity State Governor, Joseph Monytuil to appear in Juba on Tuesday to discuss ways of ending the conflict.
Edmund Yakani, the Executive Director for Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) claimed that the deadly violence between Twic Mayaradit and Ngok Dinka is politically motivated by political elites of both conflicting communities in the country and diaspora.
“The President should this time around take serious decisions against those political elites that fueled the deadly violence among the two conflicting communities,” Yakani told The Dawn in Juba on Thursday.
Yakani stressed the need for President Kiir to ensure that the perpetrators of communal violence between the two warring communities are held accountable.
“Among the key decisions that the president should undertake are legal steps against those identified political and other elites that are involved in fueling the deadly violence,” he said.
“There is a need to restrict the movement of armed youth and their relevant allies around areas of the contested villages and immediate implementation of the resolutions of the Council of States on the conflict headed by Hon. Angelo Bada,” added Yakani.
Yakani suggested that President Kiir holds a meeting with elites from both communities to seek ways to restore peace and stability in the region.
He urged President Kiir to implement resolutions for the creation of a buffer zone between the two communities, adding that troops comprised of non-Dinka and Nuer should be deployed in the zone.
Twic community of Warrap state has been engaged in clashes with Ngok Dinka of Abyei region over a piece of land located in Aneet that borders the two areas.
On 31st December 2023, the Abyei Deputy Chief Administrator Gen. Noon Deng Nyok along with five people including two of his bodyguards were ambushed and killed by suspected armed youth while on their way to Agok to attend the New Year prayers at Jouljok Parish.
