At least 22 have been confirmed dead following deadly cattle raid on Thursday in Duk County of Jonglei State, said a lawmaker on Friday.
Philip Thon Leek Deng, the MP representing Duk County in the National Legislative Assembly blamed armed Murle youth from neighboring Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) for the attack.
Initial reports had suggested the death toll at 14, but the latest figures reveal 22 people killed and dozens injured.
“The 14 people were the number killed yesterday (Thursday) night but the field search on Friday revealed more bodies in Poktap airstrip,” Leek told The Dawn in an interview.
He disclosed that 13 injured people have been evacuated to Juba for medical treatment.
Leek said that two cattle camps in Poktap area came under attack by the armed youth from GPAA, adding that the attackers made off with sizable number of cattle.
He said that survivors of the attack are still traumatized by the events.
Leek also said that they have reports of the armed Murle youth planning another attack in Panyaang Payam of Duk County.
Elizabeth Nyadak John, Jonglei State Minister of Information and Communication corroborated Leek, saying that armed youth stormed cattle camps in Duk Padiet and Duk Payuel and raided over 100 heads of cattle.
