Lakes state farmers on Friday started harvesting food in farms around Rumbek center and Wullu Counties.

Lakes state farmers on Friday started harvesting food in farms around Rumbek center and Wullu Counties.

The farms are owned and supported by sisterly counties youth for livelihood incubation centre.

Poth Majak Daljang, the minister of agriculture and forestry said the harvest is being carried on farms measuring 56 feddans.

He encouraged the youth to grow sufficient food in order to boost food security in the state.

The ongoing harvest is being supported by international NGO Plan International.

John Sawat, a member of the relief and rehabilitation commission (RRC) said they are going to lobby partners to provide them water storage equipment to irrigate the farms.

 He encouraged youth to refrain from being idle and instead put their energy in farming.

Deng Mayom Agal, Chairman of Rumbek center County praised President Salva Kiir Mayardit for appointing  Governor Rin Tueny Mabor who has stabilized security in the state to allow farmers to grow food on their farms.

The Executive Director for Wulu County, Abednego Degur Makuac, appealed to pastoralists not to disrupt farming activities.

He added that some pastoralists have been suspected to have set some farms ablaze due to conflict with farmers.
