Government reiterates neutrality in Sudan conflict

The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ramadan Mohamed Abdallah Goc on Tuesday reiterated South Sudan’s commitment to maintain neutrality in the conflict in Sudan.

 Goc said these remarks during a meeting with the Egyptian Ambassador to the Republic of South Sudan, Moetaz Mostafa Abdelkader at his office in Juba.

A statement issued on the Facebook page of the ministry of foreign affairs and international cooperation, said ther meeting focused on the situation in Sudan as well as the bilateral relations between the two countries.

Deputy Minister Goc and Ambassador Mostafa discussed the ongoing situation in Sudan, including the influx of refugees and returnees from Sudan.

He emphasized that the government of South Sudan is closely monitoring the events unfolding in Sudan due to the economic ties between the two countries, particularly in the oil sector, because Juba relies on the oil pipeline infrastructure to export crude through Port Sudan.

Goc also highlighted South Sudan’s close contacts with all relevant parties in Sudan and also expressed his belief that the Sudanese themselves are capable of finding a solution to the ongoing challenges.

He emphasized that the role of the South Sudanese government is to facilitate and arrange a forum that brings both parties together.

Goc praised the strong and cordial bilateral relations between Egypt and South Sudan.

For his part, Ambassador Mostafa said that the Egyptian government will continue to support the peace initiative in the Republic of Sudan.

He also noted that existing bilateral relations between South Sudan and Egypt in the field of education will continue to flourish.

The meeting also touched on regional issues, including peace and security. Both parties highlighted the important role of the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in spearheading peace initiatives in the region.

Goc said that the government of South Sudan remains committed to supporting peace and stability in Sudan and will continue to work closely with regional partners to promote lasting solutions.
