The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, James Pitia Morgan has reiterated the unwavering commitment of the government to organize and conduct free, fair, and inclusive elections.
He emphasized the significance of international cooperation and reaffirmed South Sudan’s readiness to collaborate with the international community to achieve this goal, according to a statement issued on the Facebook page of the ministry on Thursday.
Morgan said these remarks while meeting the head of the UN peacekeeping mission (UNMISS) Nicholas Haysom in Juba, where he called for unified voice in informing the people of South Sudan about the upcoming elections.
The meeting between the two leaders discussed the upcoming general elections in the country and the humanitarian situation of Sudanese refugees.
During the meeting, Minister Morgan highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts with the international community to ensure a successful and transparent electoral process in South Sudan.
He expressed his willingness to work closely with both UNMISS and the international community.
For his part, Nicholas Haysom praised the government for its commitment and engagement in addressing the challenges faced by South Sudan in 2024.
He also discussed the negative impact of the conflict in Sudan on South Sudan and acknowledged the progress made by South Sudan to open its borders for Sudanese refugees.
Haysom assured UNMISS’s commitment to supporting the people of South Sudan in their preparations for the elections scheduled for December 2024.
Both parties recognized the importance of addressing humanitarian issues to ensure stability in the country.
The Minister and UN Special Representative agreed on the significance of collective efforts in tackling these challenges and promoting the well-being of the South Sudanese people.
