The shooting to death of an armed South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF), soldier after he breached the compound of the peacekeeping force in Juba should be conclusively investigated.

The investigation which should involve UNMISS and the government should work to unearth the motive behind the incident, because it could have had serious ramifications if the intruder had killed a number of peacekeepers.

Since the government has acknowledged the incident and is full aware of the details of the soldier should help speed up the investigation.

The soldier succumbed to his injuries after peacekeepers opened fire in self-defense. This incident should be a wakeup call for both UNMISS and the leadership of the SSPDF as far as their security is concerned.

It could be the first incident in the last five years to happen within the UN compound, because previously we have heard incidents of armed civilians trying to force their way through the UN compound in remote parts of the country.

The latest incident is serious enough to be investigated because it puts to test the security of peacekeepers in the country.
