The Executive Director for Community Empowerment for Progress Organization, Edmund Yakani has criticized the poor working conditions for immigration officers at the Nimule border town near Uganda.

“The working conditions for our immigration officers in the Nimule immigration office are stressful and unfair for the dedicated sons and daughters of South Sudan working as immigration officers. Conditions of the office buildings, computers, and cleanness of the office, information recording system and practices are all below the required standards,” Yakani said in a statement issued in Juba on Friday.

Yakani blamed the political leadership, directorate of immigration in the national ministry of interior and the ministry of finance planning for not prioritizing improvement of the working conditions in the Nimule immigration office building.

He said that all the immigration officers at various ranks in Nimule are committed to deliver in the required duties, adding that unfortunately they are working under stressful and poor conditions.

Yakani said that the revenue generated from Nimule is enough to help improve the working conditions for the immigration officers in Nimule.

“It is disturbing to see our Nimule border post immigration office building not projecting the good image for the country; immigration office space is treated as the first structure that new visitors always use to assess the image of the country. The conditions of the immigration office building, working materials/equipment and human resources require immediate attention and intervention from the leadership in Juba,” he said.

He urged President Salva Kiir to intervene to fix the sorry state and work and poor working conditions within the Nimule immigration office, adding that the sorry state of the immigration office portrays bad image of the country.

He called on the national minister of interior Angelina Teny and the Inspector General of Police and the director of immigration to urgently visit and view for themselves the working conditions of the Nimule Immigration officers.

Yakani also reminded the national parliamentarians currently in recess to visit Nimule immigration office and assess for themselves the working conditions of the immigration officers besides the huge revenues they generate on daily basis at Nimule border post.
