The Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Federal Republic of German Annalena Baerbock on Friday visited the refugee settlement camp in Gorom hosting Sudanese refugees who fled fighting since April 15 2023.
Baerbock was accompanied by John Dabi the Deputy Commissioner for the Commission for Refugees Affairs.
She also visited the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) where she held talks with UN soldiers before visiting the Gorom refugee settlement located about 20 kilometers west of Juba.
Baerbock said that refugees living in Gorom refugee camp are in dire need of humanitarian assistance.
“They urgently need support of a humanitarian kind, water, food, but what everyone says above all is medical care,” she said.
“That is why it is important that we need to continue to provide humanitarian aid to these people, and that we make sure that they are provided with the necessary support,” Baerbock added.
Baerbock said that Gorom refugee camp is facing severe overcrowding following an influx of new arrivals from Sudan.
“Here in the refugee camp where I am right now, this is designed for 2,000 people. Now more than 12,000 people are living here,” said told reporters during a press conference on Friday,” she said.
South Sudan has provided refuge to thousands of displaced persons from neighboring Sudan since fighting broke out between the Sudan Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.
Germany is the second-largest donor of humanitarian support to vulnerable people across the world.
Gorom is home to refugees from Ethiopia, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo for years.
It was set up for about 3,000 people but by December was home to around 10,000 refugees.
