The deadly violence last week in the Abyei Special Administrative Area has baffled the country because it comes in the aftermath of President Salva Kiir issuing a presidential order to end the violence.

The communities of Ngok Dinka of Abyei and Twic of Warrap state have been engaged in deadly fighting since last year over disputed land in the Aneet area at their border. Intelligence reports have cited the presence of the Nuer spiritual leader Gai Machiek and his loyalists as having an active hand in the conflict.

The Presidential order cited him and called for his immediate expulsion from Warrap state with his supporters who are mostly Nuer from Unity State.

The presidential order remains redundant and yet as we speak more than 52 civilians including two UNISFA peacekeepers have been killed in the clashes that broke out since Saturday, last week.

The national security forces and the other security organs need to act swiftly in order not to undermine the presidential order. South Sudanese may take the reluctance to implement the presidential order as a weakness which leaves the President exposed.
