The death toll in communal clashes between armed youth from the Warrap State and the neighboring Lakes State and Unity State has risen from 19 to 39.
Elijah Mabor Makuac, the spokesperson for Lakes State police told The Dawn on Friday that they have confirmed 20 youth killed from Lakes State following clashes with rival armed youth in four cattle camps located in Luacjang area of Warrap State.
He disclosed that the number of the wounded on their side stands at 36.
Barach Malith, the minister of health in Warrap State said that the number of the dead on their side is 19, adding that the wounded are more than 52.
Warrap State authorities claim that clashes involved an attack emanating from Pakam of Rumbek North County, Gok-Tooch of Cueibet County of Lakes State and Nuer Adoi of Panyi-Jaar County of Unity State.
The violence came in the aftermath of the deadly clashes on January 27-28 in the Abyei region which left 54 people killed, including two United Nations (UN) peacekeepers.
Experts have warned that a rise in communal violence could disrupt ongoing preparations for the general election scheduled in December.
