The Chairperson for Common People Alliance Deng Bol Aruai Bol said his budding opposition political party is ready to contest in a presidential race during the upcoming 2024 general elections.

“The Common Peoples Alliance (CPA), in a comprehensive 14-page document, has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to participating in the upcoming elections.

The CPA has also stressed the existence of significant obstacles that pose challenges to the successful organization of these elections,” Bol said on Monday in a statement.

“The CPA emphasizes the importance of inclusivity, transparency, and accountability in any transitional arrangements. It urges engaging in a participatory process to define the government’s structure and objectives,” he said.

Last week, the United Nations Experts commenced their mission to South Sudan, tasked with assessing the country’s needs and the feasibility of holding elections in December 2024 for electoral support.

Bol said CPA has raised worry over the conduct of elections within the given timeframe, adding that there is a lack of political will and urgency exhibited by the government in expediting the electoral process.

“In cases where conducting elections becomes unfeasible due to challenges and risks, the CPA suggests forming a transitional government through consensus. This government should represent various political interests and include all stakeholders,” he said.

“The CPA suspects that the current administration may be covertly planning to extend its term by 1, 2, or even 3 years while misleading the public with assurances of their commitment to holding elections. Consequently, the CPA firmly rejects any extensions or delays,” Bol said.
