At least two people were killed and ten others wounded during cattle raiding on Sunday in Akobo County of Jonglei State.
Bol Deng Bol, Executive Director of INTREPID-South Sudan and Chairperson of Jonglei Civil Society Network accused Murle armed youth of attacking Thep cattle camp in Akobo County at 8:00 AM on Sunday.
“This is to express condemnation of the violent act that transpired this morning in Thep Cattle camp, Akobo County of Jonglei State, which prematurely took the lives of 2 and injured 10 cattle keepers,” Deng said in a statement issued on Monday.
Deng explained that the incident occurred a few days following last week’s peace conferences between the communities of Jonglei and Pibor.
“It is surprising, because, peace conferences were held last week and December 2023 and in less than 4 days, a relapse is witnessed. My sincere condolences to the victims may the bereaving families and relatives find solace in the Lord,” he said.
Deng called on both communities to end cattle raiding and embrace peace.
“This is enough. The perpetual violence meted out the vulnerable and nonviolent folks should be put to an end at all costs. Our people have suffered to the brim. Putting this violence to a meaningful end should be a priority to both Governments of Jonglei State and Greater Pibor Administrative Area,” he said.
He called on the governor of Jonglei state and the chief administrator of the Pibor administrative area to take responsibility for ending cattle raiding that has left several people killed.
“Rescuing our mothers, Children, elderly, wives and sisters including Youth who are often raped, kidnapped, maimed and murdered is a significant prime obligation of both Governments,” Deng said.
