President Kiir meets members of the UN Human Rights Commission in South Sudan

President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Wednesday met a delegation from the UN Human Rights Commission in South Sudan led by Yasmin Sooka to discuss collaborative efforts to address and promote human rights in the country.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Wednesday met a delegation from the UN Human Rights Commission in South Sudan led by Yasmin Sooka to discuss collaborative efforts to address and promote human rights in the country.

The Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Dr. Elia Lomuro said after the meeting between the President and the three-member visiting Commission that the government has provided a comprehensive report to the Commission on the implementation of the peace agreement and the human rights situation in the country.

For her part, Yasmin Sooka said they exchanged views on human rights issues and assured the President of their readiness to prepare an authentic report on the current situation in South Sudan.

The Human Rights Commission was formed by the UN Human Rights Council in March 2016, and it is mandated to monitor and report about human rights in South Sudan, to make recommendations to prevent further deterioration of the situation, and to report and provide guidance on transitional justice.
