5 killed during cattle raid in Akobo, Uror Counties

At least five people were killed recently in two separate attacks in Akobo and Uror Counties of Jonglei State by suspected armed youth from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) State.

Puok Nyang Tutjiek, the Commissioner Akobo County on Friday said that the first attack happened on Monday in Kaikuiny Payam Yidit Payam in Akobo County which left three people killed and a child abducted.

“Monday, 12th February 2024, two people were killed in Kaikuiny Payam and another person killed in Yidit Payam in Akobo County respectively by criminal militias from GPAA and another incident in the East, a young girl was abducted in Nyale village of Kier Payam while on her way to the cattle camp,” Nyang said in a statement.

It said that in a separate incident the attackers ambushed on Thursday travellers on their way from Yakuach Payam to Lankien, killing two and injuring two others in Uror County, and raided over 200 cattle in Pieri Payam.

“All these incidents were carried out by Murle Militias from GPAA and these attacks demonstrated a lack of cooperation from Pibor Youths, this has confirmed a provocative attack on Lou Nuer while Lou Nuer people are for peace,” Nyang said.

He said that the attack occurred a few days after the conclusion of a three-day peace conference between Lou Nuer and Murle which resulted in handing over 6 abducted children and a woman to Likuangole County by Akobo county authorities.

“I also called on GPAA county authorities to control their Youth who are on rampant attacks in recent days in Lou Nuer territory to prevent the collapse of the peace,” Nyang said.
