President Salva Kiir Mayardit, the Chairperson of the East African Community (EAC) on Thursday traveled to Rwanda on a one-day working visit aimed at engaging leaders to discuss ways of ending growing tensions amongst the member states.
The Presidential Spokesperson, Lily Adhieu Martin Manyiel in a statement posted on the Presidential Press Unit Facebook page, said the President will also proceed to Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo respectively to meet the leaders to settle their disputes amicably.
President Kiir’s visit comes as tension escalates in the Great Lakes region.
The President was seen off by the First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny and other senior government officials.
The visit to Kigali comes in the aftermath of fighting flaring in recent days in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo between the M23 rebel group and government forces, resulting in dozens of soldiers and civilians being killed or wounded.
The DRC, the United Nations and Western countries have accused Rwanda of backing the rebels in a bid to control vast mineral resources, which Kigali has denied.
