The opposition African People’s Congress (APC) on Monday welcomed the recent introduction of the biometric payment system to help weed out ghost names on the government payroll.

“This is an importance step in the right direction in dealing with persistent issues of ghost names or duplicate names on the government payroll that is draining public coppers unnecessarily,” it said in a statement issued in Juba on Monday.

It said called for restructuring and streamlining the bloated public service sector to make it competitive and effective in terms of delivering services to the population.

APC said that overstaffing in various government institutions has contributed to poor service delivery, as well as resources being wasted on unproductive or redundant workers.

“We understand that the wage bill is now standing at SSP 80 billion or USD 80 million per month,” it said.

APC alled on the government to enact laws that would determine allowances, benefits and privileges for public officials.
