El-Merreikh FC has lost an appeal before the Higher Appeals Committee of the South Sudan Football Association (SSFA) to be crowned champions of the recently concluded South Sudan National Football Cup.

William Andaria Lado, the Chairman of the Higher Appeals Committee of SSFA on Wednesday said that the appeal was filed by Bentiu-based El-Merreikh FC after it’s match on February 25th 2023, with Jamus FC of Juba was marred by violence.

The match went to penalties before it was abruptly halted due to crowd violence at Buluk Playing Ground in Juba.

“Reports from the referee and match observer (Commissioner) detailed how El-Merreikh fans breached security measures, entering the field and disrupting the match proceedings by causing disturbances,” said Lado in a statement.

“As a result, El-Merreikh FC has been officially handed a defeat of 2-0 and will forfeit their share of the match income. Additionally, the club is required to cover the costs of damages incurred to the field chairs during the incident,” he added.

Lado disclosed that the chaos erupted during the penalty shootout following the intense and closely contested match between El-Merreikh FC of Bentiu and Jamus FC of Juba, adding that SSFA remains committed to ensuring the safety and integrity of football matches in South Sudan.

Lado revealed that the Organizing Committee of the SSFA made the decision to declare Jamus FC as the champions of the South Sudan National Cup, adding that  the Higher Appeals Committee has upheld the initial decision, deeming El-Merreikh FC’s appeal inadmissible.

“This ruling serves as a stern reminder to all clubs and fans alike regarding the importance of upholding the values of sportsmanship and fair play. Football is a game that unites us all, and it is imperative that we uphold its principles and spirit at all times,” he said
