President Salva Kiir on Thursday graduated 870 police cadets consisting of the 22nd and 23rd batches of the South Sudan National Police Services.

Kiir while presiding over the graduation of the cadet officers urged them to take action on rising crime amid the prevailing economic hardship in the country.

“The number of criminals has increased and crime has developed to a greater extent, which makes it difficult for the regular forces to deal with them,” Kiir said during the graduation ceremony held at the John Garang Mausoleum in Juba.

“There must be a strong and positive relationship between the police and the civil population; the police must provide security for the civilians and protect their property,” he disclosed.

Kiir called upon all South Sudanese to join hands in collaborative efforts to build a peaceful and progressive nation.

He urged the police to make great effort to implement the law and protect the citizens and their property.

Angelina Teny, the Minister of Interior underscored the importance of upholding safety and security for all citizens as enshrined in the constitution.

The Inspector General of Police, Atem Marol Biar urged the police cadets to join hands with the leadership of the police service to work together as agents of change.

Biar also cautioned the fresh graduates to steer clear of partisan politics in order to perform their functions with neutrality.

“The suffering of civilians must end through you, and I advise politicians to leave these officers alone, don’t interfere with them they have a job to do,” Biar said.

South Sudan is supposed to hold elections in December 2024 at the end of the current transitional period.

The deployment of the first batch of unified forces is critical to provide security before elections are held.
