"We Dare where others fear"
The largest opposition party-Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-In Opposition (SPLM-IO) on Friday said that holding the upcoming general election in the absence of the permanent constitution violates the revitalized peace agreement.
It also called for undertaking population census, repatriation of refugees and internally displaced persons and also full unification of forces. These crucial things are well underlined in the peace agreement as they guarantee free, fair and credible elections.
The delay or failure to complete some of these pending task risks returning the country to chaos, unless the parties to the peace pact dialogue and agree on the timeline for implementing these tasks.
In a separate development, the two parties are also in disagreement over the unilateral decision taken by President Salva Kiir to clip the powers of Puot Kang Chl, the minister of petroleum that has rendered puppet before his undersecretary.
This development occurred on January 31, 2024, when President Salva Kiir issued republican decree transferring powers to oversee oil sales and service contracts to the undersecretary William Anyak Deng.
The SPLM-IO says this is against the spirit and letter of the peace agreement which calls for collective consultation and dialogue before any major decisions or changes within the transitional government are made by either party.
