The World Food Programme (WFP) has cut food rations for nearly 12,000 Sudanese refugees at Wedwell refugee settlement in Aweil West County in Northern Bahr El Ghazal State due to significant funding gaps.
Mamud Mohammed, leader of Wedwell Refugee Settlement said that the refugees now receive 50 per cent of a full ration, down from 70 per cent.
“WFP usually give us 70 per cent food ratio out 100 per cent but now they have reduced it to 50 per cent which is not enough to sustain this big population,” Mohammed told journalists at the refugee camp on Thursday.
Mohammed said that the cutting of food rations, leaves thousands of refugees struggling to meet their nutritional needs in the camp, especially pregnant women, children and elderly people.
“We are requesting WFP to increase the food ratio for refugees so that they will not suffer more It have affected us badly including pregnant women,” he said.
He appealed to humanitarian agencies to continue providing them with assistance.
“We are appealing to all international and national NGOs to provide us with more assistance because these people lost everything during the conflict in Sudan.”
Since the war broke out in Sudan on 15 April between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), hundreds of thousands of Sudanese refugees have arrived in Northern Bahr el Ghazal.
