Local authorities in Aweil town of Northern Bahr El Ghazal State on Wednesday destroyed about 10,000 sachets of the banned alcoholic gins.

The State Minister of Information, Garang Zachariah Lual told journalists in Aweil town that the destroyed alcoholic gins such as Royal Star and Star Gin were confiscated five months ago from the market.

“These two brands of alcohol gins were brought from Juba and they are not healthy to our people,” Lual said.

“The government of Northern Bahr El Ghazal State in 2021 passed a resolution in the council of ministers banning sale of alcoholic gins and the town mayor also passed the resolution that these drinks should not be sold in Northern Bahr El Ghazal State,” he added.

Lual said that the ban aims to mitigate traffic accidents, suicide deaths, rape, harassment and intimidation that are recurrent.

He said that these banned alcoholic gins are being abused mostly by teenagers.

“People have been smuggling these drinks into Northern Bahr El Ghazal State and this is why we have come today to burn them so that the importers in Northern Bahr El Ghazal know that these things are banned,” Lual said.
