The latest report conducted from September to October 2023 by the Food Agriculture Organization (FAO) has revealed that rampant inter-communal violence is the leading cause of food insecurity across the country.

The transitional unity government needs to speed up the deployment of the 83,000 unified forces and also carry out comprehensive civilian disarmament.

South Sudan has for over the last 10 years been ranked as one of the most insecure countries globally.

The presence of vast underutilized land and water should prompt the government to secure peace. Once peace is secured people will be free to farm and harvest enough food for both consumption and export.

South Sudan is impoverished because of the political leadership getting priorities wrong. This common theme has been recurring over the years as more money is channeled into the security sector.

The country will not secure peace if food security is not achieved because most of the conflicts in the country are not driven by competition for local resources but poverty and food insecurity.

The politicians need to beware that they will be judged as failures if food insecurity persists over the next five years from now.
