UNMISS urges government to probe killing of its staff in Ruweng

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and head of the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) Nicholas Haysom, on Tuesday called on authorities to investigate the killing of his staff in Abiemnhom area of Ruweng Administrative Area, close to the border with Warrap State and Abyei. 

Charles Kiir Gone who was gunned down on Tuesday was serving as a heavy vehicle operator serving with the peacekeeping mission in Wau, in the north-west.

He was reportedly killed during an attack by armed men in a relative’s home, where he was staying.

Gone was on leave from work at the time of the attack that has been linked to cattle rustling.

Haysom in a statement condoled with the family and urged authorities to immediately investigate the incident.

“We call on South Sudanese authorities to investigate this heinous crime and do their utmost to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice,” Haysom said.

Haysom expressed shock and sorrow over the killing.

“We are shocked and saddened by the killing of our colleague and offer our sincere sympathy to his loved ones for their tragic loss.”
