Armed attackers suspected to be Murle on Saturday ambushed trucks carrying food supplies belonging to the World Food Programme (WFP), leaving one driver killed.

Elizabeth Nyadak John, the Minister for Information in Jonglei State told The Dawn on Monday that the convoy of 10 trucks which came under attack on Saturday morning was transporting food to Nyiror County.

The trucks clearly marked with the WFP logos were travelling from Bor town to Nyiror County when they came under attack.

Nyadak said the armed youth looted more than 100 sacks of maize, adding that the slain driver is a Somali national.

“When they reached Duk County, they fell into an ambush, the last truck fell into an ambush and the criminals suspected to be from Greater Pibor started shooting the wheel and the truck stopped moving and they shot the driver in the head and he died on spot,” she said.

Nyadak said the co- driver ran from Panyany Payam up to Pandut which is five hours walking distance.

For his part, Abraham Kelang the Minister for Information in Greater Pibor Administrative Area when contacted said he was not aware of the incident.

“The statement made by the Jonglei side is not true and we are also not aware of that because WFP vehicles are not only in Greater Jonglei and they are distributing food across the country,” said Kelang.
