MTN appoints new Chief Executive Officer

Mobile telecom giant MTN on Tuesday announced the appointment of Monzer Ali as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) replacing the outgoing Gordian Kyomukama who was at the helm for over the past four years.

Mobile telecom giant MTN on Tuesday announced the appointment of Monzer Ali as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) replacing the outgoing Gordian Kyomukama who was at the helm for over the past four years.

“MTN South Sudan yesterday (Tuesday) announced a leadership transition at a staff town hall event held at the Crown Hotel in Juba. Monzer Ali was officially introduced as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTN South Sudan, effective April 1, 2024,” said a statement issued by MTN South Sudan in Juba.

It noted that Monzer Ali brings over 23 years of experience in the telecommunications industry, having held progressively senior positions at MTN since 2004.

It said that Ali previously served as Chief Technology and Information Officer of MTN Uganda.

Andrew John Bugembe, who assumed the role of Chairman of the Board in November 2023 while also serving as CFO of MTN Uganda, welcomed Monzer Ali to the team.

He emphasized the importance of South Sudanese culture and people and praised Monzer Ali’s passion and ability to get things done.

The Outgoing CEO Gordian Kyomukama, who is stepping down after four years of service expressed his gratitude to the staff and leadership for their dedication and support during his tenure.

He specifically mentioned the unwavering support he received from both the Vice President’s Office and the MTN Group, as well as the staff who remained invested even during his absence from the country in 2021.

Monzer Ali’s outlined his vision at the helm of MTN South Sudan which includes his commitment to building upon the strong foundation established by Gordian Kyomukama.

He also said he aims to build a “people first” approach to leadership and outlined five key pillars that will guide his leadership such as prioritizing employee well-being and empowerment for better business outcomes, fostering a culture of ethical values and open communication, transforming strategy and vision into tangible results through efficient execution, encouraging continuous improvement and internal benchmarking and prioritizing network integrity with an end-to-end focus and implementing strategies to reduce waste and optimize resource allocation for future investments.
