A group of 70 officials from the opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Movement- in Opposition (SPLM-IO) in Lakes State have crossed over to the SPLM led by President Salva Kiir Mayardit.

Poth Madit, the former Deputy Governor of Lakes State said on Thursday that he joined the SPLM with other officials including MPs, State Ministers, Members of the National Liberation Council and Chairpersons of State Independent Commissions.

“It is true, I have defected to the SPLM along with other comrades and the event has been organized today in the SPLM house, we have resigned from SPLM-IO and have defected,” he told The Dawn in an interview.

Madit said claimed that the SPLM-IO party doesn’t represent the aspirations of the people of South Sudan.

“I have 70 people so far and they include leaders from the government and leaders who are in party structure in the state and this is not a list of membership, it is a list of leadership,” he said.

“These are very senior people in the party but we have middle-level leaders who are holding various positions of the party in the state and the list is 70 as of now and the list is growing.”

Madit said they decided collectively as politicians to resign to prove to the people that they didn’t join SPLM-IO for political positions.

“We know the fact that when you defect from a political party and join a different political party, any position you held before on the ticket of that party, you will have to vacate it.”

The group of SPLM-IO members was welcomed by Governor Rin Tueny Mabor at Lakes State SPLM house in Rumbek.
