Luanyjang community of Tonj East County in Warrap State has called on the Minister of General Education and Instruction, Awut Deng Acuil to help them identify the suspects threatening to harm her.

Mathew Mathiang Magordit, the Chairperson of Luanyjang community on Thursday said the accusation leveled against the community by the Minister could be construed as defamatory.

“This unverified accusation and generalization amount to character assassination and tarnishing the good image of Luanyjang community, as such Luanyjang community demands Hon. Awut to produce an official letter written by Luanyjang threatening to kill her,” said Magordit during press conference held in Juba on Thursday.

He called on Awut to cooperate with them to identify the suspect behind the death threat.

On March 8, 2024, the Minister of General Education and Instruction Awut Deng Acuil held an urgent press conference where she claimed to have received a life-threatening letter believed to have been authored by suspected individuals from the Luanyjang community.

“I hereby, make it clear that any life threats; whether written or verbal is a criminal offence. I therefore urge the security sectors to take note of this threat with all seriousness it deserves,” said Acuil on March 8 2024 during press conference,” said Awut.

Awut is the MP representing Tonj East County in the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA).

Magoordit revealed that Luanyjang community leadership has widely consulted among all it’s leadership and members and found out that there was no official letter issued by any Luanyjang community member threatening to harm Awut.

“In fact, the Minister is our leader, our daughter and our wife and if there is any of such, it is surprising to Luanyjang community, the Minister’s press briefing about people conspiring to kill her tainted the image of the community,” he said.

In February 2021, youths from Luanyjang community led by Marcelo Deng Magon, the former interim youth chairperson wrote a letter to President Salva Kiir Mayardit accusing Minister Awut of intentionally barring primary eight pupils in Tonj East County from sitting the Primary Leaving Examinations under the pretext of insecurity.

In response to this letter, Awut filed a lawsuit in 2022 in the Juba County Court against Machiek Dongrin, Marcelo Deng Magon, the Interim Chairman of Luanyjang Youth Union and Tinjok Ruben Dhal, a medical student from Bahr el Ghazal University.

Magoordit said Luanyjang community is not involved in any feud with Awut but it’s only aware of a case before court filed against a group of youth from the community.

“Luanyjang community is aware of Awut having a case in court against some Luanyjang youth related to the cancellation of 2021 primary leaving examination in Romic of Tonj East and this does not warrant death threat as put by the Minister,” said Magoordit.
