Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Juba John Akec on Thursday officially handed over office to his successor Prof. Robert Mayom Deng Koriot.
Akec said he was so delighted and very confident that the University of Juba will continue to flourish under the leadership of Mayom.
“I am signing my Handover Report which I am going to deliver to the incoming Vice Chancellor, Professor Robert Mayom Kuoirot, to carry the torch forward,” Prof. Akec said on his Facebook page on Thursday.
Prof. Robert Mayom Deng Koriot was appointed last week by the Chancellor President Salva Kiir Mayardit replacing Akec who had served for ten years.
Akec congratulated Mayom upon being appointed the next Vice-Chancellor and wished him a successful tenure.
“To sit at the helm of the Administration of the University of Juba. It is a historical moment in the history of our country and the University of Juba. Today we are going to meet our Chancellor to say goodbye thank you for all your support.”
Mayom who hails from Bor in Jonglei State worked as a senior lecturer at the prestigious University of Khartoum in the 1970s. He holds a PhD from Durham University in the United Kingdom.
He was the first South Sudanese to be conferred a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry.
Inorganic chemistry deals with synthesis and behavior of inorganic and organometallic compounds. This field covers chemical compounds that are not carbon-based.
Mayom was also the first South Sudanese senior lecturer at Kenyatta University (KU) in 1986 and also lectured at the Ivy League University of Melbourne in Australia in the early 1990s.
