Central Equatoria state opens new slaughterhouse in Gumbo

The Central Equatoria state minister of animal resources, fisheries and tourism, Alex Lotiyu has on Wednesday in collaboration with Zebed Investment company inaugurated a new slaughterhouse in Gumbo in the outskirts of Juba.

The Central Equatoria state minister of animal resources, fisheries and tourism, Alex Lotiyu has on Wednesday in collaboration with Zebed Investment company inaugurated a new slaughterhouse in Gumbo in the outskirts of Juba.

“Considering the fact that butchers stay close to people, it is a meaningful to have a slaughterhouse, it is lucrative business that must be organized, do not slaughter sick animals because meat-borne disease will affect the community,” said Lotiyu.

Ibrahim Zabad, the head of Zabad Investment said the facility will provide clean and healthy meat to the inhabitants of Gumbo, adding that the construction of modern slaughterhouse will contribute to improvement of human and animal health.

Bol Dut Lual Dut, the president of Butchers union said the union of butchers must cooperate to handle slaughterhouses well, adding that maintain relationship will provide job opportunity that must benefit the south Sudanese.

“We appreciate the support ministry of Animal Resource to build slaughterhouse, the building slaughterhouse must be extended to other places across the state, with such slaughter there will be no infections,” said Dut.

“It is the first slaughtering house, we have visit it is not in this form, we need coordination between the ministry of Animal Resources , the state, butchers union and the butchers, butchers play a role in organizing meat sectors,” he said.

Meat hygiene has been for years, in South Sudan, a major public health issue, due to the fact that people living in and around the major town had no hygienic facilities for slaughtering livestock.
