The leader of the Common People’s Alliance (CPA), Deng Bol Aruai on Friday called on the Political Parties’ Council to reduce the registration fees for political parties from 50,000 to 5,000 U.S dollars.
“Considering the dire economic circumstances facing the nation, the CPA proposes a significant reduction in registration fees to a maximum of 5,000 dollars with half of the amount refundable if a party is deemed ineligible for registration,” Bol said in a statement issued in Juba.
This came after the Political Parties’ Council initiated 50,000 dollars for a Provisional License and an additional 25,000 dollars for full registration bringing the total to 75,000 dollars.
Bol said the reduction will help reduce the financial burden on aspiring political parties and foster an inclusive political environment.
He disclosed that the current registration fees are exorbitant, adding that it’s meant to lock out some newly formed opposition parties from registering and participating in the upcoming election.
“The CPA adamantly opposes the notion of paying 75,000 dollars to the Political Parties Council which is perceived to be under the influence of the ruling SPLM party,” Bol said.
He called for solidarity among political parties in challenging the unjust registration fees.
“The future of democracy in South Sudan hinges on the ability of all voices to be heard, free from undue financial constraints imposed by regulatory bodies,” Bol said.
He noted that neighbouring countries like Kenya charge significantly lower fees for registering political parties.
