Government to launch first review on SDGs

The Ministry of Finance and Planning said it will launch on Thursday the first voluntary national review on sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which will guide the coordinated implementation of the goals.

Agok Makur Kur, the Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning on Wednesday that the event spells out actions by the government to achieve the SDGs by 2030.

“The purpose for the event is to enable the country to prepare its inaugural report on the SDGs for the upcoming high-level political forum on sustainable Development Goals in New York City this July,” Makur said in a statement issued in Juba.

He disclosed that the event will demonstrate the government’s commitment to transparent governance and sustainable development on the global stage.

Makur said the review will focus on SDGs on zero hunger, good health and wellbeing, quality education, climate action.

He said the voluntary national review on Sustainable Development Goals provides opportunity to assess South Sudan’s progress so far and to reflect on the efforts that need to be done to achieve Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

“By taking stock of our achievement and challenges, we can better strategize for future and accelerate our journey towards sustainable development,” Makur said.

He said achieving the ambitious targets of the 2030 Agenda requires partnerships that bring together government, civil society, the private sector and other actors.

“I encourage all the citizens to stay focused on the ongoing awareness in the media so that each and every one can be engaged in the voluntary national review process and implementation of the SDGs,” Makur said.

“Collective action from everyone is required for our country to make significant strides towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and building a brighter future for all South Sudan citizens,” he said.
