Government seeks to protect over 5 million wildlife species in Jonglei, Pibor

The government on Friday warned it will crack down on illegal poachers in Jonglei State and neighbouring Pibor Administrative Area.

This comes after the population estimation done by the Ministry of Wildlife Conservation and Tourism confirmed 5.8 million wildlife species at risk of poachers in Boma of Pibor Administrative Area, Bandingilo National Park and Jonglei landscape.

 “It is worth mentioning that our population these days has been trying their level best to live on these wildlife, this is to inform the public that killing of wildlife is prohibited by law,” said Michael Makuei Lueth, the national minister of information, communication technology and postal services told journalists after the weekly cabinet meeting in Juba.

 He said the population survey focused on four wildlife species including white tiang, gazelles, boar and reedbuck.

 “If you are caught killing wildlife or carrying parts of wildlife meat, you are subject to arrest, you will be arrested and you will be brought to book because this is violation of the law,” Makuei said.

“Wildlife is one of the most reliable resources, if it is properly protected it will constitute big tourism and generate a lot of revenues it is not non-renewable like oil,” he added.
