President Salva Kiir Mayradit is set to meet again with his counterparts of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Angola to discuss a peaceful end to the ongoing fighting in the Eastern region of DRC.
On 24 March 2024, Kiir held a meeting with Felix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo in Kinshasha, the capital of DRC in a bid to bring an end to fighting in the North Kivu region where the Congolese troops have been battling the March 23 Movement rebels allegedly backed by Rwanda.
Kiir also met Joao Laurenco, the President of Angola who has been attempting to mediate peace in the restive eastern region of DRC.
“The main objective of the mission was to address the dispute between DRC and Rwanda, they agreed that President Kiir should within this month call for a joint meeting of the two heads of states in order to resolve that issue,”Michael Makuei Lueth, the minister of information, communication technology and postal services told journalists after the cabinet meeting on Friday in Juba.
Makuei also disclosed cabinet passed three UN Conventions such as the UN Convention Against Transnational Crime 1998, Protocol for Prevention and Suspension and Punishment for Trafficking in Persons especially women and children and the Protocol on Smuggling of Migrants by Land and Sea and the Protocol on Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking of Firearms.
He said these protocols will be deliberated upon and ratified by the national parliament.
