The South Sudan Civil Society Alliance (SSCSA) has warned parties to the 2018 revitalized peace agreement to end defections ahead of the upcoming December 2024 elections.

Dabek Mabior Arek, Acting Chairperson of SSCSA said defection among political parties threatens and undermines trust in the ongoing transitional peace process.

“We call upon them to refrain from defections and changing allegiances, thereby ensuring a peaceful and conducive electoral process for the benefit of all South Sudanese citizens,” Mabior said in a statement issued on Friday in Juba.

Mabior called on the parties to the agreement to uphold the spirit of unity and cooperation outlined in the revitalized peace agreement.

“It is imperative that they prioritize the well-being and interest of the populace above all else as we move towards the electoral period,” Mabior said.

He also called upon the National Election Commission (NEC) to provide transparent and accurate data regarding voter registration.

“The dissemination of the information is crucial for successful realization of the forthcoming election, fostering trust and confidence among the electorate,” Mabior said.

He stressed the need for political parties to adhere to the electoral process, which he believes will empower citizens to make informed decisions and actively participate in shaping the future of the nation.

“We urge all political parties to adhere to guidelines set forth by the election commission. They must engage in activities aimed at educating the community on electoral processes and civil education before, during and after elections,” Mabior said.

Over 200 members of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-in opposition (SPLM-IO) under First Vice President Riek Machar, last week defected to the SPLM party in Warrap State.
